I’ll be away from the blog for a little while, focusing on family during this time. I appreciate your continued prayers for my wife and mother-in-law.

TrevinSeven1webPodcast:

  • Brandon Smith and I released a new episode of Word Matters, answering the question "Did Jesus spend the night in hell?" from 1 Peter 3. You can subscribe to the podcast here: iTunes | Android | RSS
  • I was a guest on the Established Church podcast to talk about Bible translations. You can listen here.

Kindle Deal: The Mingling of Souls: God’s Design for Love, Marriage, Sex, and Redemption by Matt Chandler. $2.99.

Seven of the best articles I came across this week:

1. Peter Lawler – Conservative Postmodernism, Postmodern ConservatismA worthwhile essay that considers the current cultural moment for conservatives. Conservative postmodernism, by acknowledging and affirming as good what we can really know about our natural possibilities and limitations, is radically opposed to liberated postmodernism–and to the modern premises it radicalizes.

2. Jen Pollock Michel – Why Homesickness Is HealthNostalgia may have disappeared from our medical dictionaries, but we haven’t cured the ache for home. To be human is to know the grief of some paradise lost.

3. Derek Rishmawy – A Note on Biography, Theology, and Ad HominemA needed word in a day when it becomes more difficult to debate ideas because of fear of offending someone personally.

4. J.R.R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis went to see Snow White together, and they both hated the dwarves. Here’s the story.

5. Jamie Dean – New Convictions. A report on why the criminal justice system needs reform and how some Christians are engaging in the process.

6. Brandon Smith – The Dearth of Patristic Theology in EvangelicalismAside from a few notable contributions by evangelicals, the field is mostly dominated by Catholic theologians and the occasional non-evangelical Protestant. This needs to change.

7. Nika Mavrody – The Dangers of Reading in BedI had no idea that reading in bed was considered controversial for a long time!

TrevinSeven1webKindle Deal: Reading the Sermon on the Mount with John Stott. $3.99.

Seven of the best articles I came across this week:

1. Alex Tizon – My Family’s SlaveOne of the most riveting essay / profiles I’ve read in recent months.

2. Molly Worthen – U Can’t Talk to Ur Professor Like This. An article on the need for formality in the academy. No, we’re not all the same.

3. Kevin DeYoung – The Death of Expertise. On a related note, here’s a good review of an important book, and why it matters today. All people are created equal, but not all opinions are on the same plane.

4. Karen Swallow Prior – How to Love Your Ideological Enemy. I love Karen’s idea of hospitable orthodoxy and how it guides a wise and loving response. Still, I believe we need to consider more deeply the apostles’ reaction to heresy. On the one hand, gentle correction sometimes. On the other, significant rebuke.

5. John Kimbell – Consider these 5 things before your church plans a short-term mission trip. I’ve been both short-term and long-term missionary, and I think these suggestions are fantastic.

6. Dave Itzkoff – Jimmy Fallon Was On Top of the World. Then Came Trump. It is sad that our society seems determined to root out any un-politicized, non-polarized pocket of our culture.

7. Timothy George – Retrieval for the Sake of Renewal. Putting the “Center for Baptist Renewal” in historical and theological context.
